The headset is a wear part that is heavily stressed by various factors such as weather conditions, terrain, and usage. It is the link between the fork and the frame, ensuring that the fork sits securely in the frame while allowing for easy steering movement. The headset typically consists of two bearings—an upper and a lower—integrated into the frame's steer tube. These bearings must absorb the forces generated while riding while keeping dirt and water out.

When selecting the right headset, it is important to know the different standard sizes. The most common sizes are 1" and 1 1/8". While the 1" headset is mainly found on older, classic bicycles, the 1 1/8" ahead headset has become standard on modern bicycles.

The designs of headsets can be categorized into different types defined in the Standardized Headset Identification System (S.I.H.S.):

• External Cup (EC): In this traditional design, the bearing cups are located outside the frame.
• Zero Stack (ZS): Here, the bearing cups sit inside the frame, allowing for a slimmer design.
• Internal Stack (IS): In this modern design, the bearing cups are fully integrated into the steer tube.

The top cap is a cover that secures the headset, while the wedge or expander plays an important role in the stability of the fork steerer. Particularly with carbon forks, it is important to use the correct expander to avoid damage.
